WinSport Winter Update

Calgary’s largest recreational multi park is right across the street from Greenwich and seasons are shifting to welcome the winter wonderland.  November 26 has been set as the tentative opening date for winter activities and December 27th for the new XL Park.

New in 2022-23 – the XL Park!

Our special on-hill competitive features are now the XL Park.

The XL Park provides access to the XL halfpipe (22 feet tall, 120 feet long) and the XL slopestyle course. These features are designed by a FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation) course designer for the World Cup events happening at WinSport this season and will be sure to test even the most talented skiers.

To access, you will need an XL Park hill ticket or an XL Park season pass. The XL Park Pass is an add-on to your winter season pass, or you can purchase a single day XL hill ticket to try out the park.

Winter hill season pass holders will get free access to the XL Park for the first two days of operation.

We are putting the finishing touches and final details on some of the fencing in anticipation of opening the dog park area.  With an off-leash dog park, basketball court, community garden and kids playground structure all included in this park, another fabulous amenity is almost ready for residents in Greenwich to enjoy year-round.  Come on out and enjoy the new playground area with the family.

Calgary Farmers' Market Now Open!

The recent grand opening of Calgary Farmer’s Market West was a massive success.  The 55,000 square foot building is Calgary’s newest destination for shopping local.  Open year-round, the West location hours are:

WinSport Gets an Upgrade


Greenwich occupies one of Calgary’s most envious locations, on the gate to the mountains and just minutes from downtown.  Calgary’s largest athletic, outdoor facility sits just across the street and Winsport is about to have a substantial redevelopment upgrade.  The proximity of Winsport and its continued development as a world-class recreational facility adds to the abundance of amenities at Greenwich’s doorstep.

It’s been 35 years since WinSport’s day lodge was first opened to be used as a media centre for the 1988 Winter Olympics.  Since then, it has done more than what was asked of it and went from a media centre to a hub that brought Calgarians together for over three decades.  The Government of Canada has announced that it will be investing more than $17.4 million to help transform the community hub.  The federal support comes through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program.


The project will significantly enhance the WinSport visitor and guest experience for the next 40-plus years. Some known changes coming with the renovation will be improved access from the parking lot to the hill with the elimination of stairs; improved flow, accessibility and expansion of the rental shop and food court; the addition and renovation of washroom facilities to ensure accessibility and inclusivity; more deck space.  Construction will hopefully begin early next spring or summer following the ski and snowboard season. The entire project is expected to take roughly 18 months to complete.

Whether mountain or road, Greenwich is located in the key location for biking access in and around Calgary.  Winsport across the street features Calgary’s only lift-assisted mountain bike terrain with adrenaline pumping downhill and even cross country trails leading into Edworthy park and the infinite river valley system.  Road-wise, popular rides span out to Bragg Creek and beyond, Cochrane or the national parks for the uber-committed types.

Biking resource wise, one of Canada’s largest bicycle retailers is a 10 minute bike ride from Greenwich.  Bow Cycle Opened in 1957 by Jim and Mary Sibthorpe, Bow Cycle was first established as a small bicycle and sporting goods store in beautiful downtown Bowness, Alberta (at that time, Calgary had not yet grown to engulf the smaller outlying towns and communities).   Since then family and eventually an ownership group comprised largely of employee owners have continued to run the business servicing Calgary’s riding needs.

While a lot has changed at Bow Cycle, a lot has stayed the same. During a radio ad in the early 1960s, Jim Sr. coined the phrase, “Bow Cycle, this is where the fun begins.” From that day forward, those words have served as the blueprint for how the business is ran. Bow Cycle and the riding options around Greenwich make for a perfect cycle oriented community.

Lock Up Your Bike

While bike theft has always been an issue, the last couple of years have certainly seen an increase in bike theft. Bow Cycle would like to remind you to protect your bike. Whether you have a beat-up commuter that takes you to the office, or a custom-built machine that gets cleaned more than your car, lock it up when it is out!

Our recommendations

  • Choose the correct lock – Think about where you are locking it up and for how long. We suggest U-Lock for anything over a couple of minutes.
  • Always lock your bike – So much bike theft is a crime of convenience. Take those extra moments to lock it up and do it correctly. Lock it to something solid and not a pole it can be lifted over.
  • Lock your bike in a well-lit, busy area – this will make the less brazen think again.
  • Make sure you lock your bike to something that cannot be cut.
  • Lock according to value. That means frame first, then back wheel, and finally front wheel. Replace skewers with lockable axles and swap QR seat binders for allen key ones.
  • Make sure the lock fits snugly! The less room inside of the u-lock or chain, the more difficult it will be for thieves to use their tools.
  • Position your lock off the ground with the keyhole facing down. Make it difficult!
  • Make your bike unique. Replace one piece with something easily identifiable and difficult to remove. This makes identifying your bike easier.

Rocky Mountain hosts a wide variety of lessons including the First Step beginner lesson to teach all the skills needed to belay for a partner on our 65ft. climbing walls. The bouldering area has something for everyone, there is over 150 feet of different ‘problems’ to solve. Bouldering is climbing on shorter walls without a rope or harness, following different colours to get to the top. In addition to all our climbing walls we also have a café where we whip up espresso-based drinks as well as artisanal flatbreads. While there have been many changes to the fitness industry during this pandemic, the hope is to be back to offering all climbing lessons and programs in the Fall! Farmers' Market Construction Update

We are pleased to announce that Clark Builders has been awarded the lead contractor position to bring the Calgary Farmers’ Market West to life. Clark Builders has a strong track record of delivering high-quality projects with a focus on design, functionality, and community integration. 

Construction on the Farmer’s Market has begun! We are excited to see this project move forward and anticipate an opening date of Easter 2022.

Meanwhile, we still plan to bring CFM pop-ups to the Greenwich community. Unfortunately, we had to cancel all events for 2020. In Summer 2021, we hope to enjoy 10 pop-ups with you! Stay tuned for more information on those.

Our next construction update will include a timelapse taken onsite, so that you can see the progress being made! We will also be announcing more amazing tenants who will join the Farmers’ Market in this awesome development.
