Parklovers Paradise in Bowmont Park
Green space is everywhere in Greenwich. Explore the nearby Bowmont Park.
Just west of Greenwich and a 5 minute cruise down Stoney Trail across the Bow River, lies one of Calgary’s most beautiful and nature abundant park areas. The 164 hectare park was created in the early 1980s and named by joining the names of the nearby communities of Bowness and Montgomery.
The park features a number of natural ponds, hiking trails, picnic areas with tables, a designated off-leash area, Playgrounds as well as Baseball and Soccer fields.
Several projects are now underway to protect and improve the park including Compensation to the Fish Habitat, Updating Dale Hodges Park and Dog Bag Dispenser program.
Read the geological history of Calgary on the “walls” of this park. Bowmont contains a steep cliff face that illustrates several chapters of the city’s geological history. You can also see an unusual, spongy-looking, geological formation called “tufa”. Associated with the tufa is a three-metre-high waterfall. Near the waterfall is a scenic lookout over the Bow River Valley. This park provides an opportunity to experience a mature riverine forest with its abundance of flora and fauna.
Bowmont contains grasslands, valleys fed with permanent sources of water and bushy off-shore islands. There is also a mature Balsam Poplar riverine forest. This type of forest was once very common along river banks across the North American prairies. But, because these forests rely on periodic flooding for regeneration and most of the rivers have been dammed, the forests are under threat throughout much of their range.
The waters of the Bow River are home to species such as Canada Geese, Common Mergansers and several species of gulls. The trees and shrubs along the river are migratory routes for many species of warblers and vireos. There is ample evidence of the presence of beavers as many of the trees have been wrapped with wire to protect them from being chopped down. If you like amphibians, Boreal Chorus Frogs and Tiger Salamanders have been seen in the inland ponds.
History
At the top of the cliff face, you can see a thin layer of soil. This is the rich soil that nurtures the grasslands and crops that are so important in the European history of this area. Under the soil are 18 metres of sediment that were deposited on the bottom of Glacial Lake Calgary. The lake was formed as the last glaciers melted but the runoff was blocked by an ice dam further down the Bow River Valley.
Below the sediments lies the bedrock called the Porcupine Hills Formation. This bedrock was formed about 65 million years ago. When water percolates down from the surface, through the sediments it absorbs calcium carbonate. As it strikes the bedrock it flows sideways and exits out the side of the valley resulting in the falls in Waterfall Valley. The water then deposits the calcium carbonate on the algae covered rocks, producing the tufa.
Two sections of the park have undergone major changes. One area was used for agriculture and commercial greenhouses and the other for a gravel pit and concrete plant. These areas are being restored to a natural environment.

Rocky Mountain hosts a wide variety of lessons including the First Step beginner lesson to teach all the skills needed to belay for a partner on our 65ft. climbing walls. The bouldering area has something for everyone, there is over 150 feet of different ‘problems’ to solve. Bouldering is climbing on shorter walls without a rope or harness, following different colours to get to the top. In addition to all our climbing walls we also have a café where we whip up espresso-based drinks as well as artisanal flatbreads. Winsport, formerly known as Canada Olympic Park, and the entire COP hill dominates the west view with an immense park and recreational drop back to border Greenwich.
Calgary’s only 4 season, full-out recreational haven for skiing, snowboarding, lift-assisted mountain biking, gymnastics, luge, bobsled, curling, and even mini-golf as a next-door amenity to Greenwich is immense. WinSport aims to keep you ‘on the go’. WinSport’s mission is to enable people of all ages and abilities to discover, develop, and excel at sport. Some of their latest offerings include limited winter hill tickets, ski and snowboard lessons and the Tube Park for outdoor fun.
Advanced online bookings are required. Be sure to read the Winter 2020/21 update and check Covid-19 protocols before arriving.
- Winsport is now offering two-hour hill tickets. Tickets are $32 each (all age categories). Available for two-hour mid-day sessions on the weekend.
- It’s never too late to learn something new this winter, we have private lessons, multiday lessons and women’s only lessons available this season.
- Slide the day away in our tube park. The perfect outdoor family activity, our tube park offers thrills, laughs and will leave your family smiling.
Over the coming months, WinSport will be hosting exciting events Canada Curling events such as the Tim Horton’s Brier, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and World Men’s Curling Championship. Stay tuned for more details from Curling Canada and what channels to watch in the coming weeks.
Additional outdoor events may be held at WinSport and have yet to be announced. If Covid-19 restrictions ease later this year, we look forward to re-opening our arenas, fitness facilities and other venues with programs for all Calgarians.

Farmers' Market Construction Update
We are pleased to announce that Clark Builders has been awarded the lead contractor position to bring the Calgary Farmers’ Market West to life. Clark Builders has a strong track record of delivering high-quality projects with a focus on design, functionality, and community integration.
Construction on the Farmer’s Market has begun! We are excited to see this project move forward and anticipate an opening date of Easter 2022.
Meanwhile, we still plan to bring CFM pop-ups to the Greenwich community. Unfortunately, we had to cancel all events for 2020. In Summer 2021, we hope to enjoy 10 pop-ups with you! Stay tuned for more information on those.
Our next construction update will include a timelapse taken onsite, so that you can see the progress being made! We will also be announcing more amazing tenants who will join the Farmers’ Market in this awesome development.

We have roads!
The majority of Bowfort Road has been paved and the concrete curbs and sidewalks are now complete.
Constructing Calgary Farmers' Market
Construction is well underway on the much anticipated 2nd location of the Calgary Farmers’ Market. Services are complete and over the winter, shallow utility installation will take place. We are now working on the building itself so watch this space in Greenwich over the next year to see it take shape.
